Today saw our ADVANCE CRT Researchers take part in the final session of our Beyond the PhD: Career readiness series with career development coach Lorraine Shine. 💫

For this final session Lorraine spoke to us about managing career transitions.

🙏 First up, we looked at workplace culture and the work environment. These two factors are hugely important in determining if a particular role in a particular company is a good fit for you.

🔎 We then looked at job search strategies, where Lorraine explained that it is better to send out some quality, tailored applications, as opposed to as a high volume of generic ones. We also looked at the application process and working with recruitment agencies.

👩‍🏫 Mentorship was discussed next and attendees were tasked to think about who in their current roles would be suitable mentors for them.

💪 Finally, we discussed the importance of self-belief and confidence and how, as ADVANCE CRT Researchers, we stand out from other applicants.

This session was part of our Beyond the PhD: Career Readiness Series—a targeted online training programme supporting PhD researchers, funded by Research Ireland, as they approach the final stages of their journey. The goal is simple: to help them think strategically about their next steps and make informed career decisions that truly recognise the value of the skills, experience, and effort invested during a PhD 🎓

ADVANCE would like to say a huge thank you to Lorraine Shine for coordinating these sessions! Her insight will have an undeniable impact on our researchers as they move forward to the next stages of their careers.
